FAQs

  1. Assessment Appointment

All patients need an assessment appointment with the doctor for accurate medical history and examination and discussion of the laser therapy. It is important that you bring any investigations, reports of scans if any which can prove helpful in creating a treatment plan for you. You don’t require a referral from your doctor.

  2. How Does Laser Therapy Work?

Light-sensitive elements of the body absorb the light of a specific wavelength that is penetrating and reaches the targeted tissue that is damaged. It is a process that is similar to photosynthesis in plants. The absorbed light gets converted to usable energy, which leads to a reduction of inflammation, pain relief, enhanced immune response, and on the whole, the healing time also shortens due metabolism that is more efficient.

  3. Application

Laser /LED Probes are applied with specific dose and frequency based on guidelines and according to the medical condition and location of the problem. When they are applied over the problem area pain or heat is not felt. Sometimes a very mild warmth may be felt.

  4. Time and Frequency of Application

10-15 minutes per joint or area and can be ranging from 1 to 3 times a week depending on the history and nature of medical condition with overall 6-12 sessions for stabilizing the condition and then a maintenance session of 1 / month can be offered if the illness is very long standing and recurring like advance osteoarthritis of knee.

  5. How quickly I feel the benefit

It depends on the conditions. An acute /fresh injury may respond right away and a long term / Chronic Illness may require 3-4 sessions to start responding. The detailed long-lasting effect may take longer depending on the nature of the medical problem.

  6. Any Side Effects and Safety

LLLT is non-invasive and does not hurt, it doesn’t feel hot or cold (may feel warm sometimes for sensitive patients). A direct beam on eyes is unsafe hence we offer professional eyewear for the protection of your eyes. No adverse side effect is documented so far. Some patients may feel tiredness, thirstiness, sleepiness and so on for a little while following the treatment. In addition, some patients (applicable for patients on pain management program) may feel slightly increased painful sensations a few hours after treatment, this is consistent with the literature, which describes it as the beginning of the healing process, this will not last long. We suggest plenty of fluids before and after the session to reduce the mentioned effects.

  7. Is there a risk of developing skin cancer from exposures to the Laser beam?

To date, there have been no reports of mutation as a result of low-level laser irradiation in research articles published.

  8. Who may not be suitable for LLLT?

There are some contraindications (not suitable) to the use of LLLT, these include:

    • Irradiation of the abdomen for pregnant patients
    • When malignant tumors are located in a target area for application.
    • Light sensitive patients – pulsed light may initiate a seizure for some epilepsy patients, though no incident has been reported if continuous or invisible beams of light are applied.
  9. Would normal tissue be affected?

Healthy tissue also absorbs light. Damaged or stressed tissue, however, is associated with a lower absorption threshold. That is why they are more likely to receive the benefit of LLLT.

  10. Will I need to continue my medications?

Yes, the patient is encouraged to continue their usual medications including ay pain medications. After the pain alleviation, the patient may be considering lowering the dose of pain medications or stopping them after consulting the doctor.
